It’s a common frustration: you open your crisper drawer to prepare a meal, only to find your lettuce and your cucumbers are frozen solid. When a refrigerator begins acting like a freezer, it leads to food waste and unnecessary grocery expenses.

At Aggieland Appliance Repair, we see this issue frequently. While it might seem like a catastrophic failure, the cause is often a specific component that has drifted out of calibration or a simple airflow issue.

Here are the primary reasons your refrigerator is freezing your fresh produce.

1. Improper Temperature Settings

- Aggieland Appliance RepairIt sounds like a little too easy of a fix, but the thermostat dial can easily be bumped while loading groceries. Most refrigerators should be set between 37°F and 40°F.

If your model uses a dial with a 1–9 scale, remember that these numbers usually represent cooling power rather than degrees. Setting it to “9” makes it the coldest, which can easily drop the internal temperature below the freezing point of water (32°F).

2. Blocked Airflow and Vent Placement

Refrigerators cool by circulating frigid air from the freezer compartment into the fridge through a series of vents. If you place high-water content items—like celery, lettuce, or tomatoes—directly in front of these vents, they will freeze almost instantly.

The Fix: Make sure there are a few inches of clearance between your food and the back or side walls where vents are located.

3. Faulty Temperature Control Thermostat

- Aggieland Appliance RepairThe thermostat directs voltage to the compressor and fan motors. If the thermostat is defective, it may keep the cooling system running continuously, regardless of the actual temperature. If you turn the thermostat from the lowest setting to the highest and do not hear a click, the part likely requires replacement.

4. Malfunctioning Thermistor

Modern refrigerators use a thermistor (a sensor) to monitor air temperature and send readings to the control board. If the thermistor is damaged or inaccurate, the control board won’t know when to stop the cooling cycle. We can test this component using a multimeter to check for proper resistance.

5. Damper Control Assembly Issues

- Aggieland Appliance RepairThe damper is a small shutter that opens and closes to regulate how much cold air enters the refrigerator compartment from the freezer. If the damper gets stuck in the open position, too much cold air will pour into the fridge, causing temperatures to plummet.

Professional Repair When You Need It

If you’ve checked your settings and cleared your vents but are still finding ice on your carrots, it’s likely a mechanical failure. Continuing to run a refrigerator that is over-cooling can put undue stress on the compressor, leading to more expensive repairs down the road.

Our team provides expert diagnostics for all major brands. We’ll identify the faulty sensor or mechanical part and get your kitchen back to peak performance.
